IDENTITY

CONQUER YOUR OWN STYLE

I am me. I may look like you, but if you take a closer look you will realize that I am nothing like you at all. I am very different. I see things from a completely different perspective because in my life I had experiences that you didn't have, and I had feelings you didn't have, and I've lived places and seen places and experienced life from a completely different point of view than you have. I may be wearing the same shoes and the same haircut, but that gives you no right to have any preconceived notions about what I am or who I am.

OUR COURSES

Welcome to Ms. Proffitt's Art Studio Website!

We offer a wide array of classes in order to give our students a well rounded arts education. We are transitioning to a choice-based curriculum this spring semester (2017). This type of curriculum has many benefits including maximizing our student's learning ability by teaching them to develop  creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills by focusing on teaching students how to think, act, and behave as an artist. The curriculum is partially structured after Harvard's Project Zero's Research: The Studio Thinking Project. This was a multi-year investigation in how the arts are taught, what students learn and how teachers design instruction for the arts. (See more at: The Studio Thinking Project).  In their action research, they discovered that there are 8 Studio Habits of Mind that are utilized in an art studio:

1. Develop Craft

2. Engage & Persist

3. Envision

4. Express

5. Observe

6. Reflect

7. Stretch & Explore

8. Understand (Arts) Community

Another important framework that is used in the structure of our arts program is called Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB).  Taken directly from their website, (Teaching for Artistic Behavior), this is a summarized explanation:

"Choice-based art education regards students as artists and offers them real choices for responding to their own ideas and interests through the making of art.  Choice-based art education supports multiple modes of learning and assessment for the diverse needs of students."

In this framework, the curriculum is centered around teaching students the essential behaviors of an artist (which are influenced by the Studio Habits of Mind). These include:

Artists Create Original Art

Artists Develop Art Making Skills

Artists Communicate Through Their Work

Artists Take Risks

Artists Collaborate/Community

Artists Solve Problems

Artists Reflect

Artists Have a Global Awareness of Artmaking

For more information, visit the aforementioned websites OR for an in-depth look at exactly how our program is structured, click this link: TAB Curriculum

**Art Educators: If you are interested in discussing any of this with me, please don't hesitate to reach out to me! (Contact box at the bottom of this page)

How it all works: Students will be shown short demonstrations on how to use materials and how to do different techniques with all the many kinds of media. They will then work through media centers where they are able to explore and apply the techniques and media in order to maximize their own learning. Then throughout the year they will be guided through "Units" of all the various artistic behaviors in order to teach them how to think, act and behave like an artist. With each project that they create, with the guidance of the current unit, they will have the full license to let their creativity flow and create what they are inspired to create using the tools, skills and behaviors they have learned! They will then reflect on what they learned by writing in their blog. If they don't know how to use some certain type of media, they can ask for a personal lesson from Ms. Proffitt OR they can look it up on the video section of this website OR they can look it up on YouTube. Art class is where you learn how to problem solve. Art class is where you learn how to be creative. Art class is where you learn essential life skills that you won't learn in any other class. I look at arts education as a foundation that brings all other classes together to make sense out of the various types of information learned. The depth of each students' learning is up to them.

Other offered courses:

We also offer:

  • Art 2: [2-D]

  • Art 3: [2-D]

  • Art 4: [2-D]

These courses are taught by Mrs. Borden (she comes over from the Intermediate school in the afternoons). These courses are structured similar to the 3-D classes as far as each level up is more advanced and exploratory.
